William Gallas names player Chelsea should have signed in place of Fofana, Koulibaly

Former Chelsea defender William Gallas says the Blues should have signed 2022 FIFA World Cup star Josko Gvardiol last summer instead of bringing two ‘panic signings’, Wesley Fofana and Kalidou Koulibaly, to Stamford Bridge last summer.

Chelsea have been linked with a move for Gvardiol, who features in Croatia’s run to the World Cup semi-finals in Qatar.

And Gallas fears the Premier League giants have missed the boat when it comes to the transfer of the RB Leipzig star, as several other clubs have now expressed interest in the 20-year-old.

“Chelsea were linked with Gvardiol last summer, and they should have signed him then,” Gallas told Genting Casino. “Instead they had Fofana and Koulibaly.

“They already have Thiago Silva and Azpi [Azpilicueta]also, so it might be difficult to get Gvardiol now. At the beginning of the season it would have been a nice shot, but I don’t know if it would be now.

“Chelsea panicked over the summer. They saw some players and put a lot of money on them when they weren’t worth their money to me.

“Some presidents spend too much money when they have no idea what they’re doing,” he added.
