At the themed costume party, the then 20-year-old prince chose between a pilot costume and a Nazi uniform. “I called Willy and Kate and asked what they thought. Nazi uniform, they both said,” Harry wrote in his recollections.
Prince Harry then arrived at the house and tried on the costume for them. “They both burst out laughing. Worse than Willy’s suit! Much more ridiculous! Which of course was the point of everything,” Harry explains.
In 2005, the British tabloid The Sun published a photograph of Harry in a Nazi costume on its front page, thus unleashing a scandal of gigantic proportions.
The public has always seen Harry’s youthful recklessness as entirely his fault. However, back in 2020, royal historian Robert Lacey claimed in a biographical book about William and Harry called Battle of the Brothers that Prince William also helped choose the costume for Harry, but only the youngest of the brothers earned all criticisms.
