Willem II would like to attract an extra central defender, says technical director Joris Mathijsen. In the transfer area, however, it is still ‘quiet’ at the Tilburgers.
Because Jordens Peters has hung up his football boots and Sven van Beek’s lease expires this month, the rinse is currently thin in the heart of the Willem II defence. “It is clear that quite a bit needs to be added in the center back, but it is still quiet in the field of players,” Mathijsen says in conversation with the Brabants Dagblad. “Although of course we also look more broadly, such as the positions where we have to make further selections, for example.”
However, it remains to be seen what Willem II can do on the transfer market. Last season, the Tilburg residents already had a lot less money to spend due to the corona pandemic. Nevertheless, the ambitions remain high. “Normally, without corona, Willem II has a budget of about thirteen million,” says Mathijsen. “That was something different this season, while our player budget is about 4.4 million. This makes us the twelfth, thirteenth club in the Netherlands. Ultimately, we want a stable Eredivisiebecome a club. A club that – if the season goes dramatically – will be twelfth. But the budget will have to increase for that, we are not that far yet.”
Willem II initially headed for relegation last season. However, due to a turnaround at the end of the competition, the club finished in fourteenth place in the ranking.
