The municipality of Willebroek is issuing a police regulation that includes a ban on gathering together for more than two people and a curfew from 10 pm until December 13 in the center of the municipality. The measure comes after repeated nuisance by young people, in which earlier this week mayor Eddy Bevers (N-VA) was even attacked.

After several reports of nuisance, seven young people were arrested Monday evening for ignoring the corona rules and disturbing the peace by, among other things, throwing bombs. However, this police action does not appear to have brought the problems to an end.

On Wednesday evening, mayor Eddy Bevers was verbally aggressive and pushed by a few young people. The mayor was not injured, but filed a complaint. In the meantime, the police were able to arrest a suspect. On Thursday evening, two police officers were slightly injured during a check in Willebroek, after they had been hit by several young people. The police were able to arrest an 18-year-old and a minor as a suspect.

On Friday evening, the local police launched a large-scale control action, including thirteen suspects for various violations. A police regulation must now give the police even more scope to intervene in the event of nuisance.

In addition to the ban on gathering together and the curfew in the center, a number of shops and establishments in the Van Landeghemstraat and on the market square must also close at 6 pm – these are largely night shops.

The police ordinance also prohibits the possession of bombs and similar objects on the entire territory of the municipality. Systematic identity checks are also possible.
