BBM was born in BlackBerry when the company was still called Research in Motion (RIM). This was August 1, 2005, at the start of BlackBerry’s fame.
Back then and in the years that followed, there wasn’t as much messaging service as good. So BBM is a favorite even though it can only be used on BlackBerry phones. Its distinctive features, namely a PIN to add contacts, to a ping sound to greet friends or if the message is not replied to.
His abilities are even more sophisticated. BlackBerry Messenger then not only for sending messages, you can also send photos, voice notes, locations, to voice calls. You could say, BBM is the pioneer of modern messaging services.
Starting around 2010, BlackBerry came under intense pressure from Android and iPhone. But in fact, BlackBerry decided to give up the exclusivity of BBM so that it could be used by its rivals.
In 2015, there were still 190 million BBM users worldwide. Unfortunately, over time, the popularity of BBM has become increasingly competitive, especially by WhatsApp.
Currently, WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app in the world, with 2 billion active users, still way ahead of competitors like Telegram or Signal. The parent is also very strong, namely Facebook. Some experts also try to analyze whether WhatsApp can later be overtaken or fade in popularity as it deserves BlackBerry Messenger.
