KONTAN.CO.ID – LONDON. Launch Arab News, The Covid-19 vaccine principal investigator at the University of Oxford, Sarah Gilbert, told a parliamentary committee that her team was thinking about a second-generation vaccine formulation that could replace injections. However, this takes time to develop.
The vaccine being developed can be in the form of a tablet or a nasal spray to replace the corona vaccine injection.
“We have the flu vaccine that is given by nasal spray, and this could be a very good approach in the future to use the vaccine against the coronavirus,” he was quoted as saying Arab News.
He added, “It is also possible to consider oral vaccination where you can swallow the vaccine drug in tablet form, and that will have many benefits for the vaccine launch, because there is no need for needles for vaccinations anymore.”

However, Gilbert continued, both options should be tested for safety and efficacy, because the immune response generated by the two approaches will be slightly different from what we get from intramuscular injection.
Kate Bingham, who heads the UK government’s vaccine task force, said a two-dose injection given by health care professionals is not a good way to administer a vaccine.

“We need to get a vaccine format that is much more scalable and distributable, so whether it’s a pill or a patch or a nasal spray,” he told BBC.
