Havlíček and Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) were to discuss the gigafactory on Monday with Volkswagen Chairman Herbert Diess. In the end, Havlíček and Diess will just sign a memorandum on support for the construction of charging stations for electric cars in the Czech Republic, of which about 3,000 should be created.

A factory for batteries for electric cars could be established on the site of the former brown coal power plant Prunéřov 1. Already in the summer, Havlíček signed a memorandum with the energy company ČEZ to support the project. According to him, however, other localities are at stake, for example in Poland.

The planned Czech factory could produce batteries with a capacity of more than 30 gigawatt-hours, which is enough for 400 to 800 thousand cars a year. It depends on the technology of the manufacturer or producers of tin lithium batteries and on the capacity of the final batteries.

Also on Monday morning, Havlíček met with representatives of Škoda Auto about the effects of the outage of chip supplies on the Czech automotive industry, which employs around 180,000 people.

Because of this, it is considering supporting the industries concerned with a new Antivirus program used by the government during the coronavirus pandemic. It would replace the classic kurzarbeit, which is still not enshrined in legislation. The tripartite will discuss the support next Monday.

According to Havlíček, the planned production shutdowns should last until the end of the year. In addition to representatives of the government, Volkswagen, Škoda Auto and ČEZ, the Memorandum on Support for the Development of Electromobility is to be signed by the Directorate of Roads and Motorways, the Railway Administration and the Directorate of Waterways, on whose plots charging points should be established.
