Mülheim an der Ruhr. Which propulsion system for “The airship of the future”?

The “Airship of the Future” research project launched at the Junior University Ruhr at the beginning of the year has just come to a successful end.

The still young Theodor Wüllenkemper and Inge Bachmann Foundation had awarded the research contract to the Junior University Ruhr. Mülheim students should research ways and technical and energy alternatives that can lead to sustainable and future-oriented airship operation. In six workshop dates, the 11-17-year-old participants first gained comprehensive and thorough knowledge of the airship “Theo”. On this basis, it was then possible to tinker and experiment with different options in order to develop a new, environmentally friendly drive alternative.

“We are enthusiastic about the motivation and the knowledge of the participants and look forward to presenting an initial idea for an environmentally friendly airship together with them,” says Benedict Nooß, WDL employee and the technical project manager. The result, a solar airship with an electric drive, has already made its first flight tests on the premises of the Junior University Ruhr.

“The group presented a great project result. You can tell immediately that the spark jumped and the students put a lot of commitment and heart and soul into their work,” praises Barbara Majerus, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Theodor Wüllenemper and Inge Bachmann Foundation.

“Our idea for further action is that a university or a scientific institute takes up the results and develops them further,” says Melina Machtenberg, who had supported the students in the research project as didactic and methodical project manager, daring a courageous look into the future of research of a CO 2 free aviation.

The Children and Youth University Ruhr is an extracurricular, privately financed and non-profit educational and research institution for children and young people from four to 20 years. The sponsor is the non-profit association JUNI eV. This supports the Junior-Uni Ruhr in all non-material and financial matters. The practical and future-oriented seminars and workshops of the Junior-Uni Ruhr give children and young people room for their curiosity, joy of discovery and their urge to explore until they enter the workforce. Without grades or pressure to perform.
