Will the sticker soon cost 360 euros per year?

According to the German Environmental Aid, residents should pay significantly higher parking fees. dpa/Marijan Murat

If the German Environmental Aid has its way, driving a car – or rather parking – will be really expensive. The association demands significantly higher fees for the resident parking sticker, especially for residents in cities. So far, the federal states have been to blame for the low parking fees for residents’ cars. Only five countries would allow their municipalities to charge appropriate fees for resident parking permits.

While a parking permit for residents in other European cities such as Stockholm costs up to €1,309 per year, most German cities only charge up to €30.70 per year

Federal states and cities would thus slow down the mobility turnaround, explained the federal managing director of environmental aid, Jürgen Resch. An increase in parking fees is a key lever for households to part with second and third cars and for occasional drivers to switch to car sharing.

360 euros parking fees per year – even more for large cars

The environmental aid calls for an increase in the fees for resident parking permits to at least one euro per day and higher fees for so-called SUVs. The regulation in Freiburg/Breisgau, for example, which provides for an average fee of 360 euros per year, is exemplary. For large SUVs and pick-ups, 480 euros per year would be due. For low-income households and people with a disability card, there are significant reductions of 75 percent.

According to the information, the background is the capping of fees for resident parking permits in parking management zones to a nationwide 30.70 euros per year by June 2020. This price did not take into account the administrative burden or the cost of creating and maintaining parking spaces.
