Will the next 10 years in Europe be marked by a cancer epidemic?

Researchers say the pandemic has exposed weaknesses in healthcare systems and cancer research across the continent.

The report sets a target of 70% 10-year survival for all European cancer patients by 2035.

The study also concluded that Brexit will continue to negatively impact European cancer research unless the European research community and the UK government find a way to continue working together.

Furthermore, the study calls for the European budget for cancer research to be doubled, as well as for priority to be given to areas of cancer research in which it is sufficiently developed, including prevention and early diagnosis, radiotherapy and surgery, measures in the field of gender equality, as well as paying more attention to the care of survivors.

“Given the Covid-19 pandemic, Brexit and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it is more important than ever that Europe develops a resilient cancer research environment that plays a key role in prevention, diagnosis , in treating and improving the quality of life of current and future patients and those living after cancer,” said Professor Mark Lorler of Queen’s University Belfast.
