Will the New York Area Have a Snowy Christmas? We Tell You – NBC New York (47)

What you should know

  • The tri-state area will have some cold days, but calm weather. However, a storm could be expected by the end of this week.
  • Possible winds, sometimes heavy rains and very cold temperatures are expected for Thursday and Friday.
  • It will be very cold over the Christmas weekend and maximum temperatures are not expected to reach 30 degrees on any day.

NEW YORK — If you’re in the tri-state area, enjoy the sunshine these next few days because by the end of the week, the weather won’t be as pleasant.

Calm, cool weather is available for the Tri-State area through Wednesday before the next major storm hits the region Thursday morning. The New York City area is expected to see mostly rain, as was the case with the two recent coastal storms that dumped snow on the northern and western five boroughs. However, the wind and low temperatures are worrying.

Gusts could reach 50 mph Friday morning and temperatures are expected to drop about 30 degrees in a matter of hours, between noon Friday and Friday night. This could bring some snow into the city as a front moves. It could also trigger a flash freeze, leading to icy journeys on Friday and early Saturday mornings.

Drivers and pedestrians are advised to be very careful with weekend temperatures below 30 on both days, just in time for Christmas.

There’s a good chance we’ll be back above freezing to close out the year, with long-term forecasts calling for highs nearing 40 degrees on the fourth to last day of the year, 28 December. It’s still too early to make predictions for New Years and a lot could change with this week’s storm as it unfolds.
