Will the new VW Amarok also arrive in the R version? He would compete with the Ford Ranger Raptor

The new Volkswagen Amarok has been a popular topic lately, as the German carmaker is revealing more and more of it. We have known for a long time that this utility pick-up will arrive on the shared T6 platform, which it will take over from the Ford Ranger. Both cars should have something in common.

Recently, there is speculation as to whether Volkswagen could use this platform to create a sharp version of the Amarok R, which would become a direct competitor to the Ford Ranger Raptor. VW’s Australian commercial vehicle director Ryan Davies said in an interview with Cars Guide that Ford was unlikely to do anything like that, but there is still room for a strong pick-up.

According to Davies, Volkswagen is once again offering cooperation with Walkinshaw. The company, formerly known as HSV, was already involved in the development of the current Amarok W580, which arrived on the market in October 2020 as the most powerful variant of the car.

The question remains whether Volkswagen wants to take this path again. Apparently, a large V6 TDI engine could appear in the car, and the R mark could also come into play, which would certainly add a sporty design and various other improvements. “There is room for a lot of things in the pick-up segment. It’s up to us to try it, “said Davies.

The new Amarok should arrive in the regular version in the coming months, for which Volkswagen owes mainly Ford. Without a shared platform, this model would probably disappear. The new generation should be longer and wider than the current Amarok and will offer various four-cylinder engines as well as the most powerful V6 engine. The car will be manufactured at Ford’s Silverton plant in South Africa.
