Will the English Premier League break a 30-year tradition?
For nearly 30 years, the Premier League has maintained a tradition of not scheduling matches on the day before Christmas, however, as 2023 approaches, that tradition may be broken.
Specifically, the Premier League wants to hold the match between Wolverhampton and Chelsea on December 24, to avoid problems with the channels that own the television rights, according to a report on the website of the Argentinian channel TYC, on Wednesday.
Since the competition changed its name to the English Premier League in 1992, only one match has been held on December 24, which was the confrontation between Manchester United and Leeds in 1995.
Historically, the date remains “clean” for matches despite the crowded schedule of matches, and indeed in 2017, there was an attempt to schedule a match on that date, but pressure, especially from fans, led to it not being held.
The report stated that, apart from the crisis that this confrontation could generate, the truth is that there is no rule in the English Premier League that prohibits playing matches on that date, but rather it is a case of an “unwritten rule.”
The English Premier League calendar is characterized by the fact that it does not stop during the end of the year, with a large number of “Boxing Day” matches on December 26th.
