Will the Arab-Islamic summit in Riyadh lead to a turning point in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict? – 2024-04-19 11:18:08

/ world today news/ Tactically, Israel can ignore the position of the Arabs around the world and even the UN Security Council, but strategically – not

The declaration of the Arab-Islamic summit held recently in Riyadh on the events in Gaza, as well as the resolution of the UN Security Council, the first during the development of the current conflict, which was finally adopted on November 15, calling for humanitarian pauses in the fire zone and providing aid to the population, as expected, was completely rejected by Israel.

The arguments are still the same – Hamas uses the civilian population as “human shields”, therefore it must be held accountable. At the same time, in Israel, they speak rather dismissively about the summit in Riyadh, which limited itself to a sharp condemnation of the actions of the Israelis, but did not adopt any program of sanctions against them or their allies in the West, such as “oil embargo”.

Likewise, having disavowed the UN Security Council resolution through the mouth of Israel’s representative in the organization, they do not hide their satisfaction at the fact that it does not call for an immediate cease-fire, but only for humanitarian pauses. In the end, even Russia abstained from the vote, considering the adopted resolution too vague and non-binding.

Moreover, for this reason, those who prepared it together with Malta in fulfillment of the directives of the Arab-Islamic summit of the UAE were not among the co-authors of the resolution. The Emirates chose to join the Russian draft document, thwarted by the Westerners, presented by the Russian ambassador to the UN Vasily Nebenzya and leading to real peace.

But the arrogance of the current Israeli cabinet and the White House behind it, which believes that tactically they are winning for now, may prove premature. Not only is the raging crisis in the Middle East still far from its logical conclusion, but the process of forming a protest reaction against Israel’s actions is still in its very beginning.

The fact that the UAE, probably the most loyal to him in the region, which has not yet severed diplomatic relations with him, joined the tougher Russian draft resolution than the one passed is in itself a signal that needs to be heeded .

As well as the fact that the entire resolution of the UN Security Council expresses categorical disagreement with “the forced displacement of Palestinians” . If we keep in mind that the already obvious ultimate goal of the entire Israeli operation “Iron Swords” is precisely this task, then its achievement can be significantly complicated.

A closer look at the documents from the Riyadh summit, as well as the calendar of planned actions of the Arab and Islamic countries regarding Israel, allows us to conclude that they are perhaps approaching the current crisis more thoroughly than at any other time of worsening Palestinian-Israeli relations.

There will never again be a simple return to the previous state of the Arabs’ slow slide into gradual acquiescence to the Israeli “digestion” of the Palestinian territories. The Arabs have adopted a comprehensive and long-term program to untie this knot, which they (of course with varying degrees of enthusiasm) will now be forced to carry out.

The Joint Arab-Islamic Emergency Summit, in a 31-point resolution, emphasized the need for a just and lasting peace based on the solution of two independent states. She calls on the international community to hold Israel accountable for its actions and protect the rights of the Palestinian people.

Rejecting any attempt to characterize Israel’s attacks as self-defense or justified under any pretext, the resolution demands that the UN Security Council take a binding decision to end the aggression and limit Israel’s colonial occupation, which consistently violates international law and various UN resolutions.

The resolution calls on the international community to recognize Israel as an occupying power with all the ensuing consequences under international humanitarian law. This includes the construction and expansion of settlements, the confiscation of land and the expulsion of Palestinians from their homes.

One of the key provisions of the resolution calls on all countries to stop the export of weapons and ammunition to the occupation authorities, which are used by the Israeli army and terrorist settlers to commit violence against the Palestinian people and destroy their homes, hospitals, schools, mosques, churches and other vital infrastructure.

The leaders called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to complete its investigation into the war crimes and war against humanity committed by Israel against the Palestinian people.

Condemning the displacement of approximately 1.5 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, which constitutes a war crime under the Fourth Geneva Convention, the resolution calls on States Parties to collectively condemn and reject this act.

The text categorically rejects any attempt to individually or collectively forcibly transfer, exile or deport the Palestinian people, whether from Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem, to any other destination. Such actions should be considered red lines and war crimes.

It also condemns the illegal imprisonment of thousands of Palestinians by Israel. The document also calls for the creation of a specialized legal monitoring group overseen by the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to document Israeli crimes in all Palestinian territories. The resolution strongly condemns double standards in the application of international law, warning that such duplicity undermines trust in states that shield Israel from accountability.

The resolution calls for a conference aimed at establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East and eliminating all weapons of mass destruction in the region, as part of UN efforts to combat this threat.

One of the most prominent figures at the meeting was Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi, who, in addition to making the harshest demands on Israel, actively promoted the Shia-Sunni rapprochement agenda, which could be another unpleasant move for Israelis as well. And for the West in general.

Moreover, Mr. Raisi has been at odds with much of the Arab world by calling for a Palestinian state “from the river to the sea” to replace the state of Israel, instead of the two-state resolution that envisioned an independent Palestinian state alongside a Jewish one. country.

Unlike a number of participants in the emergency OIC summit, who proposed a two-state solution with the creation of an independent state of Palestine alongside Israel, Iran insists on democratic solutions based on the ballot box with the participation of all Palestinians.

President Ibrahim Raisi said: “At this summit, despite what some have said about the future of the Palestinian question in the form of a two-government solution, we have said that we have presented a fully democratic solution based on the voices of all Palestinians, including Muslims, Christians and Jews, for to determine their future.”

In the current situation, the Palestinians, of course, would like to see more decisive support from their co-religionists and tribesmen, but they still believe that the sacrifices made are not in vain, since strategically they allow them to completely turn the tide. row from recent years.

The chain of diplomatic recognition of Israel, forged so hard with the help of the White House over a long period of time, has been stopped and is beginning to break. A quick resolution of the Palestinian question as a key link in the entire Middle East settlement has once again become urgent for the entire world – especially the Arab world.

International pressure on Israel is likely to increase significantly in the next few weeks to end or limit its operation in Gaza, Foreign Minister Eli Cohen said on November 13. Diplomatic pressure had begun to mount, he said, and the “diplomatic window” for the IDF’s Gaza campaign would likely remain open for at most another two or three weeks before closing.
