United States, February 19, 2024.- Renowned actor Will Smith is set to play an Iraq war veteran in his upcoming thriller film titled ‘Sugar Bandits’. This news has emerged within the framework of the European Film Market (EFM) that will take place during the Berlinale until February 21.
According to reports from specialized media such as Deadline and Variety, Smith will not be the main protagonist of the film, which will be produced by himself along with Jon Mone through Westbrook Studios.
The plot of the film is based on the novel ‘Devils in Exile’ by American author Chuck Hogan. The book tells the story of an Iraq War veteran who joins an elite squad to combat drug trafficking in Boston.
Chuck Hogan, known for his work on film scripts such as ‘The Town’ and the series ‘The Strain’, has also written the script for ‘Sugar Bandits’. It is estimated that the film will have a budget of approximately $80 million.
Although the project does not yet have a director assigned, it has been released to the independent market. Initially, in 2013, the film was announced by Universal Studios with Joe Carnahan as director.
The last film in which Will Smith participated was ‘Emancipation’, directed by Antoine Fuqua and distributed by Apple.
In addition to ‘Sugar Bandits’, Smith has on the agenda the fourth installment of Sony’s ‘Bad Boys’ saga, whose recordings were delayed due to the writers’ strike in 2023. His participation is also expected in the second part of ‘ I Am Legend’, where he will share the spotlight with Michael B. Jordan.
This film will mark Smith’s return to the big screen after the incident at the 94th Academy Awards in 2022, where he slapped comedian Chris Rock for a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith’s alopecia.
