In the 90s Will Smith caused laughter, reflections and the occasional sad moment with the series “The Prince of Rap” (or “The Prince of Bel-Air”). The actor recently admitted, however, that by the fifth installment of the fiction he began to get bored and tired of the role that catapulted him to fame, reports the Vandal Random portal.
In his book “Will”, whose excerpt was released by Entertainment Weekly, Smith notes that he wanted to end the series when he perceived that the episodes were losing their fun essence to provide a much more corny and moralistic content.
“Anyone who’s ever been working on a sitcom can tell you about the episode where their show hit the point of no return. Ours was season 5, episode 15. ‘Bullets Over Bel-Air‘(‘ Bullets over Bel-Air ‘); in which I was shot and Carlton started carrying a gun, ”he explains with great accuracy.
Both Will Smith and the rest of the cast already had contracts to continue the series for a sixth season, so therefore, they had to decide whether to extend or close production once the work clauses were met.
One door closes and another opens
Will Smith certainly did not starve after the completion of “The Prince of Rap,” as he received multiple offers and opportunities to appear in movies. In this way, he believed that he could enjoy a successful career that was not only anchored to television parameters, in fact, that possibility became a reality.
In addition, the protagonist received the advice of a friend and actor, John Amos, who appeared in three episodes of “The Prince of Rap” as Fred Wilkes.
When the veteran actor was watching what was being cooked on the set of the NBC hit, he confessed that it was the evil and dire fate of all sitcoms, thus claiming that there is a moment when you must decide to conclude everything “with a certain dignity ».
Amos worked in “Good Times”, one of the most important series on the small screen, but his character was suddenly eliminated. This inspired Will Smith himself to define the decision and thus not have a bad time.
The following week, Smith told the cast that he had decided that season six would be the end of the show, thus concluding on May 20, 1996. Now, with a more dramatic reboot scheduled for 2022, and with a special reunion that has succeeded. On HBO Max, Will Smith fondly remembers those years.
