Will Smith has resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. The actor, who punched comedian Chris Rock on stage during the Oscar ceremony, calls his action “shocking, painful and unforgivable”. He says he is willing to face the consequences of his act with the Academy Board of Governors.

“The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all in attendance, and the global audience at home,” Smith said. “I have the confidence of the Academy ashamed. I have deprived other nominees and winners of their chance to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am devastated.”
From Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Science is the organization that organizes the Oscars. By canceling his membership, Smith will no longer be able to vote on who will receive a gold statue in the future. But it doesn’t mean that he himself can no longer be nominated or win an award.
