That was very different from how I grew up,” Smith says. “We’ve had a lot of deep conversations about what perfection is in a relationship. What’s a perfect way to get along? For a large part of our relationship, we chose monogamy, even though we never saw it as the only option.”

entertainment">Later they changed course. “We have given each other trust and freedom, with the idea that everyone should find their own way. For us, marriage cannot be a prison. And I’m not saying everyone should do that. I’m not saying anyone should do that. But the experience that that freedom and unconditional support gives me is the most beautiful token of love for me.”
