Smith shocked the audience by punching Rock in the face as he joked about Smith’s wife’s short hair. Smith’s wife, Jade Pinkett Smith, suffers from alopecia or hair loss.
“The number of people I hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my friends and loved ones, everyone present, and a global audience at home,” Smith said.
“I trusted the academy. I deprived other nominees and laureates of the opportunity to celebrate and be congratulated on their special work. My heart is broken.”
Rock, however, remained cold-blooded and continued to lead the event.
Half an hour after the shocking incident, Smith received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the father of tennis player Venus and Serena Williams in King Richard.
There have been conflicting reports in recent days about whether Smith was asked to leave the ceremony after the incident. The film academy said he had refused to leave.
The Academy announced this week that it had launched a disciplinary case against Smith and warned that he could face expulsion from the academy. Smith decided to go himself on Friday.
