During the filming of the series “Pole to Pole with Will Smith”, which will soon arrive on Disney+, researchers discovered the largest snake in the world. The expedition was led by Professor Bryan Fry, from the University of Queensland, and revealed a variant of anaconda never before seen in the Bameno region, located in the Ecuadorian Amazon.

According to a report by ‘IFL Science’, Professor Fry and his team, accompanied by Will Smith, were invited by the Huaorani people to explore the region and take samples from a population of anacondas in eastern Ecuador.

During a canoe expedition through the river system, they found a 6.3-meter-long female anaconda, which differs genetically by 5.5% from the species Eunectes murinus, known as the southern anaconda.

According to Professor Fry, this discovery is one of the most significant in the study of these reptiles, since it represents a new species, called Eunectes akayima or northern green anaconda, which diverged from Eunectes murinus approximately 10 million years ago.
