On August 1, the sirens will howl at the “W” Hour, or at 5 p.m. The insurgents were to start fighting at the W hour, for “explosion” or “uprising.” The time was chosen because of the increased traffic on the streets of the capital in the afternoon.

For many years in Warsaw and other Polish cities, when the clocks strike 5 p.m., alarm sirens are activated and a one-minute continuous signal is emitted.

The “W” hour is the symbolic hour at which the Warsaw Uprising broke out on August 1, 1944. However, it must be remembered that the first battles with the Germans took place in Żoliborz at approx. 2 p.m., and in Wola and Śródmieście Północ at approx. 4 p.m.
