As fans eagerly await the second season of And Just Like That, many are also hoping for the return of the legendary Samantha. Now Kim Cattrall is making it clear once and for all what she thinks of the new series.
In an interview with Variety, she also explains which scene in the planned third Sex And The City film was “heartbreaking” for her.
Kim Cattrall was not approached for And Just Like That
When the series And Just Like That announced the reunion of our favorite Sex And The City characters, many fans were split. Because as great as the joy was, finally seeing Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte again, so great was the sadness that Samantha aka Kim Cattrall will no longer be there.
Because Cattrall had already emphasized in advance that she had said goodbye to the “Sex And The City” universe, the new series couldn’t change that. What exactly happened behind the scenes is not entirely clear to this day. Rumors of feuds between Cattrall and Carrie actress Sarah Jessica Parker have persisted for years. As much as the chemistry in front of the camera was right, it is said to have cracked so much behind it. Both are very vague about the dispute. Cattrall refers to her co-stars as “colleagues,” but emphasizes that they weren’t friends. “It was professional,” she says Variety; however, it does not become more detailed.
But one thing is certain: While Parker resumed the role of Carrie, Cattrall distanced himself from the franchise. In the series, however, she turned up – at least in SMS messages that the two characters write to each other after a heated argument. Cattrall was unaware of this until the series was released. Because after she said no to the planned third movie, she was for that Didn’t even ask for a reboot.

“I was never asked to be part of the reboot. I made my feelings clear after the possible third film, so I did learn about it like everyone else – via social media”explains Cattrall in an interview with Variety. Because: “The series is basically the third film. It was so creative”she explains.
However, a scene that Cattrall described as “heartbreaking” was cut. Because obviously it was planned in part three for Samantha to get unwanted dick pics from Miranda’s then 14-year-old son. But that scene apparently wasn’t the only issue the actress had with the planned sequel. “I would have preferred if there was an event for all of us, the one third film justified. But that didn’t happen,” she explains.
Kim Cattrall turned down Samantha role three times
So after the second part she was sure: That’s it! “And as difficult as it was and as scary as it is to stand up and not be intimidated by the press or the fans or whoever – just to say I’m fine. I’m on this path It was so great working with you. I enjoyed it very much, but I’m over here”Cattrall describes the moment she said goodbye to Samantha. “Everything has to grow or it dies. When the series ended I thought that’s smart. We don’t repeat ourselves. And then the movie to finish up all the loose ends. And then there’s a movie. And then there is a movie?”
It wasn’t an easy move for Cattrall, especially after her for years when Samantha enjoyed cult status and she grew more and more fond of the character. Which is particularly interesting since Cattrall actually didn’t want to take the role. “I turned her down three times. I didn’t think I could play them. At 42 I really didn’t think I could do it. Finally I said: ‘You’re making a mistake here.’” she recalls in the interview. She finally accepted the offer and played Samantha until the story was finished for her.
Ruled out return in And Just Like That
She can easily see that she still appears in “And Just Like That”, even if it is for her strange feeling is. But: “The biggest compliment you can pay me as an actor is that I’m missed.” She doesn’t regret her cancellation at all, emphasizes Cattrall Variety “You can’t fight that feeling. I never want to be on a set and don’t want to be there.”, she says. Cattrall therefore categorically rules out a return to her role as Samantha. “It’s strong to say no”she emphasizes.
