Will Sergio Agüero make a comeback to professional football after cardiac arrhythmia scare? Comparing his case to Christian Eriksen’s return

Sergio Agüero retired from professional football at the age of 33 after suffering a cardiac arrhythmia in 2021 during a match he was playing for Barcelona. From that moment on, Kun leaned into the world of streaming and even formed a team that participates in the Kings League. However, in recent days, the message from his cardiologist excited the footballer himself and he spoke of a possible return to the fields. His case is compared to that of Christian Eriksen who had a heart problem and returned to play a year and a half later.

In 2021, the then Inter Milan player was forced to hang up his boots after suffering cardiac arrest in Denmark’s debut in the Euro Cup: he collapsed and had to be revived in the middle of the game.

A year and a half later, Eriksen surprised everyone and appeared at the Ajax reserve team’s training sessions to get ready. And Brentford was the club that opened its doors for him to return to the Premier League, a league where he had played with the Tottenham shirt between 2014 and 2019.

How was Eriksen’s return to football?

After several consultations with cardiologists, countless studies and tests in training, Eriksen was getting closer to a playing field again.

The placement of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) was what allowed him to play safely. This device monitors your heart rate and detects irregular heartbeats so that you do not suffer another episode similar to the one that occurred during the Euro Cup in 2021.

After having played just one semester at Brentford, Erik ten Hag took him to Manchester United, where he has already played 64 games since signing with the club in July 2022. As a player for the Red Devils, he played in the World Cup in Qatar 2022, in what was an unforgettable return for the player with the Denmark shirt.

The hopeful message from the Kun Agüero cardiologist: “You are doing very well”

“As it is up to now, playing that time, you will not have any problems, logically we have to do the studies, they already correspond, and make you run as if it were a game”, were the words of Roberto Peidró a few days ago, Kun cardiologist, in clear reference to a question from the former player himself about the possibility of playing a few minutes in a match.

In that sense, the doctor added: “And it is true, when you have the two centre-backs, if you have to do a fake or something like that you have to be well prepared. So I would tell you to prepare yourself, there is some hope.”

Finally, the doctor closed: “I think you are doing everything and you had nothing, we are going to monitor you a little more, in short it is possible, the truth is that you are doing very well.”

When Sergio Agüero’s arrhythmia was detected: the day he left the field and scared the world

On October 30, 2021, the player grabbed his neck in the middle of the match between Barcelona and Alavés, in the Spanish League and, after showing signs of difficulty breathing, he was treated by the team’s doctors. After a few minutes they forced him to leave the match.

Although it is true that Agüero’s cardiac arrhythmia had been detected in his youth, that day was the first time it caused him problems playing football.

“I am not going to train with Independiente”

“The news will be reaching many: it is totally a lie. I’m not going to train with Independiente. Sometimes they invent. The cardiologist said he was doing very well and it’s important. But to train again at the First level, I need a lot of studies,” Kun clarified in a Twitch broadcast.

Likewise, in a subsequent interview with ESPN journalist Ayrton Ruiz, he recalculated: “Go back to Independiente? We’ll see, we’ll see. I have to play tournaments and prepare. Before what the cardiologist said, I wasn’t even thinking about it. Now, I turn it over in my head, I wasn’t thinking about it before. “There are thousands of things I have to do.”
