Friday night is the stage for one all night at the castle to celebrate the coming of age of Princess Ingrid Alexandra.
Celebrity guests – among them Norwegian and European royals, politicians, cultural leaders and personal friends – have arrived in the rain and are now sitting around the table covered for around 200 guests.
Just before 20:30, Queen Sonja opened the ball by welcoming the guests.
– Finally we get to celebrate our dear Ingrid.
She says that during her 18 years, the princess has shown who she is and what she is good at:
– You love water sports. You are good at skiing. You also love school, and being with friends and family. You are a real tough guy – who is not afraid to parachute or to say your opinion. The latter will come in especially handy, I promise you!
The queen also conveys some words she received from her mother:
– It does not depend on how you feel, but
how to take it! It has helped me a lot through life. And these words I want to pass on to you today.
Joking and warm tone in the king’s speech
In King Harald’s speech, he highlights the day of authority in January, when the princess was a minister:
– Fortunately without the right of veto – since you never know what can come from a committed young lady like you! It was really nice and crowded up at the end of the table in the Council Chamber – when you and Dad took a seat on either side of me.
He adds that this Friday in January he really felt the strength and security that relatives should follow in the footsteps of relatives.
– But you will probably have to put up with me for a while longer!
He gives her some advice along the way, including that she still has to take time for schooling, education and play.
– I’ve told you this many times before, Ingrid, but a grandfather is allowed to repeat his most important piece of advice over and over again: Be yourself. And trust that it is enough – always.
– Many of us probably feel to a certain extent that we jump after Wirkola. But we have no choice but to do things in a way that feels right to us. Find our own inner Wirkola, to put it that way.
– I love you very much, and wish you all the best for your journey ahead. Happy Birthday.
Touched to tears as she thanks the brothers
Princess Ingrid Alexandra thanks each member of the family in her own speech. When she came to the brothers, her voice broke:
– Dear Marius and Magnus. You are my safety net. I know I can always come to you if there is anything.
A special thank you also goes to the parents:
– Mom, we can talk about everything. Thank you for allowing us to lie on the couch and watch series together, such as Sex and the City. I really appreciate everything you do for me.
– Dad, thank you for taking us skiing and surfing, and all sorts of activities.
You fix and fix, and are calm when the rest of us are not.
– I am very grateful that you support me, and I know that you always
going to do it. I’m very fond of you.
She also thanks King Harald, who had to pull the smiley ribbon when she came up with a personal detail from life:
– Thank you for the evenings on the Royal Ship where we sit and watch sports and cowboy
movies together. And not least, thank you for always having a good joke when the mood is a bit low.
