“Latvian cinema. New times. 1990–2020 ”is a collective scientific monograph created by a group of LAC researchers: LCA research assistant and guest lecturer Zane Balčus, film producer Inese Boka-Grūbe, LCA research assistant and guest lecturer Dārta Ceriņa, LCA professor and leading researcher Inga Pērkone, film critic and researcher Elīna Reitere, co-editor of the portal “Kino Raksti”, Dita Rietuma, researcher at the National Film Center, Dāvis Sīmanis, professor, researcher, film director and screenwriter at the National Film Center, Ieva Viese-Vigula, doctoral student and guest lecturer at the LCA Daniela Zacman.

The book consists of three chapters on the most important developments in terms of production and artistic expression in the form of feature films, documentaries and animated films. However, the authors also emphasize that 21st century films are characterized by the disappearance of the boundaries between film types – documentaries are increasingly used in staging and animation, feature films are mixed with staged and documentary material, full-length animated films compete with feature films, etc.

In three decades, Latvian cinema has not only experienced socio-political changes, generational change and a return to Europe, but also returned to the context of European cinema and experienced a profound technological revolution. These chapters are supplemented by smaller-scale research on certain important film genres, production system activities, film marketing, gender issues in the Latvian cinema system, etc.

Some biographies have also been derived from the study of generations in the monograph. Well aware that each of Latvia’s cinema professionals is important for the diversity of the cultural process and could prepare a separate study for each, four authors have been chosen as representatives of Latvian cinema in this monograph – director and cinematographer Ivars Selecki, documentary and feature film director and producer Laila Pakalniņš and cinematographer Ivars Zviedri, as well as animation film directors, artist and producer Signi Baumani.

All those interested will be able to follow the live event of the opening of the monograph LKA Facebook page. Starting from December 28, 2021, the book can be ordered and received at the publishing house “Dienas grāmata” or at the parcel terminal. The monograph will be available in bookstores from January 3, 2022.
