Will open a monograph on independent Latvian cinema / Article

“Latvian Cinema. New Times. 1990–2020” is a collective scientific monograph created by a group of LAC researchers: LCA research assistant and guest lecturer Zane Balčus, film producer Inese Boka-Grūbe, LCA research assistant and guest lecturer Dārta Ceriņa, LCA professor and leading researcher Inga Pērkone, film critic and researcher, co-editor of the portal “Kino Raksti” Elīna Reitere, LCA researcher, head of the National Film Center Dita Rietuma, LCA professor, researcher, film director and screenwriter Dāvis Sīmanis, animation film researcher and critic Ieva Viese-Vigula guest lecturer Daniela Zacmane.

The book consists of three chapters on the most important developments in terms of production and artistic expression in the form of feature films, documentaries and animated films. However, the authors also emphasize that 21st century films are characterized by the disappearance of the boundaries between film types – documentaries are increasingly used in staging and animation, feature films are mixed with staged and documentary material, full-length animated films compete with feature films. In three decades, Latvian cinema has not only experienced socio-political changes, generational change and a return to Europe, but also returned to the context of European cinema and experienced a profound technological revolution. These chapters are supplemented by smaller-scale research on certain important film genres, production system activities, film marketing, and the issue of gender in the Latvian cinema system.

Some biographies have also been derived from the study of generations in the monograph. “Aware that each of Latvia’s cinema professionals is important for the diversity of the cultural process and could prepare a separate study for each, four authors have been chosen as representatives of Latvian cinema in this monograph – director and cinematographer Ivars Seleckis, documentary and feature film directors and producers Laila Pakalns, director and cameraman Ivars Zviedri, as well as animated film directors, artist and producer Signi Baumani, “said the publishers.

The monograph has been created within the framework of the state research program project “Cultural Capital as a Resource for Sustainable Development of Latvia” / CARD (project No. VPP-KM-LKRVA-2020 / 1-0003), the research is funded by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia and the State Culture Capital Fund. creating a cultural offer in all cultural sectors “and” KultūrELPA “.
