In the battle for the world championship, the teams try to pull out all the stops. Around the rear wing of Mercedes has been the subject of discussion for some time now. In the Formula 1 Cafe of Ziggo Sports the suggestion is made that Mercedes can get out of the current tests.
With two races to go and a difference of 8 points between Verstappen and Hamilton in the current standings of the world championship, the battle starts. Both Mercedes and Red Bull are doing everything they can to win the coveted trophy. In addition, there is quite a bit of controversy surrounding the cars of the two teams. Mercedes in particular is under fire because of a rear wing that bends. In Saudi Arabia, the FIA will check it more strictly, but the confidence in those checks is not very high.
Operation of the wing

Driver Renger van de Zande explains how the bendable rear wing of Mercedes works. “You have a mainplate and above that also a wing. That hole is getting bigger if you should believe this photo. At high speed it is pushed down giving them more top speed. They are trying to optimize that on all sides.” According to Van der Zande, that gap was much larger in Brazil than in Qatar, but he also states that the operation of that principle is largely unknown. So it is not clear what exactly Mercedes is doing to get extra speed.
Fraud?
However, Pi reporter Jack Plooij thinks the same. He doesn’t believe the stricter technical guidelines will expose the bendable rear wing. “It will certainly work well when the car is stationary,” says Plooij. “When the car is running, there is never a test. Do you remember that trick from Ferrari? They also continuously checked that car, then it was not found either. But when that car is driving, a lot of things happen that we don’t know what is happening,” he says.
What do you think? Is Mercedes working illegally?
