It concerns the well-known work “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn” that the artist made in 1964. Christie’s told a press conference that the portrait is in the hands of the Swiss foundation of brother and sister Thomas and Doris Amman. Proceeds from the sale will go to “improving children’s lives around the world through health and education programs,” the auction house says.
“The portrait of Marilyn by Andy Warhol is even more famous today than the original photo from Henry Hathaway’s film Niagara,” said Georg Frei, president of the Ammann Foundation. “This shows the visual power of the work that will remain in force into the new millennium.”
According to a ranking by AFP, the absolute auction record for a work of art is $450.3 million. Christie’s sold Leonardo da Vinci’s work “Salvator Mundi” in November 2017.
