What is that incident of 2005?
In 2004, just a year after the UPA government was formed at the Center under the leadership of Dr. Manmohan Singh, a sting came to light and created a stir. A digital portal named Cobra Post conducted a sting operation, the title of which was ‘Operation Duryodhan’. In this sting operation, some MPs were seen getting ready to promote a company and ask questions in Parliament in exchange for money.
The portal claimed that it had collected 56 videos and 70 audio tapes after the sting for 8 months. Of the MPs whose names appeared in this sting operation, 6 MPs were from BJP. While one MP (Manoj Kumar) was from RJD and one from Congress. On January 12, 2005, a news channel ran this sting operation on air.
Hastily formed parliamentary committee
On the same day, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha hurriedly constituted a parliamentary committee to investigate the entire matter. Congress leader Pawan Bansal was the chairman of this committee. While BJP’s Vijay Kumar Malhotra, CPM’s Mohammad Salim, Samajwadi Party’s Ram Gopal Yadav and Congress’s C Kuppusamy were included as members.
And 11 MPs lost their membership
On the basis of the investigation of this committee, the then Defense Minister Pranab Mukherjee presented a proposal in the Parliament. In which it was said that the behavior of these MPs was unethical and their membership should be terminated. This proposal was also passed. The MPs of 11 members were snatched away. However, sharp opposition was seen from BJP. BJP MPs walked out. Then Lal Krishna Advani had termed this decision as ‘capital punishment’. Later the matter even reached the threshold of the court.
