Derrick Köhn left a positive impression at Werder Bremen. Will the Green-Whites take the option to buy the left-back?
Bremen – A loan transfer with a purchase option is – depending on the case – a one-year application process. The player on loan can demonstrate his skills during a season and gather arguments for a further commitment.

Derrick Köhn has been collecting plus points since the start of the season Werder Bremen. The left-back was loaned out from Galatasaray Istanbul shortly before the transfer deadline, and the Bundesliga club also secured a purchase option worth just over five million euros.
In his first appearance against Mainz 05 on the third matchday, Köhn scored a goal, and also in the following games against FC Bayern1899 Hoffenheim and SC Freiburg, the gala loan gained steam. “He has good moves, especially on offense, and is courageous“, he quotes kicker Licensed player manager Peter Niemeyer.
Will Köhn stay in Bremen? Niedermeyer provides the first answer
Köhn has “been able to bring what we expected from him to the pitch so far,” says Niemeyer, praising the offensive left-back, who shone in the 2nd Bundesliga with 20 scorer points in 53 games for Hannover 96. After the first four games in the Werder jersey, Köhn can also keep up in the Bundesliga.

The longer Köhn manages to convince, the more the question of when Werder Bremen will activate the purchase option comes to the fore. However, those responsible will in no way allow themselves to be driven by any public unrest.
“Now is generally not the time to think in this direction,” says Niemeyer, rejecting initial inquiries about Köhn staying beyond this season. Ultimately, Werder must “always keep our economic situation in mind.”
Bremen is exercising caution in the transfer market
In recent years, Bremen have been able to raise amounts in the mid-seven-figure range and even put seven million euros on the table for Leonardo Bittencourt in the 2020 transfer summer.
However, in return, player sales took place in a similar financial region – and even after lucrative transfers such as the case of Niclas Füllkrug, who arrived in 2023 for 17 million euros Borussia Dortmund changed, those responsible managed the available funds with care. In this respect, it remains to be seen whether the Werder bosses can and want to afford the transfer fee for Köhn.
