Released in February 1996 in France, Heat made a lasting mark on its time and continues to be cited among the best thrillers of all time. Bringing together Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in an anthology face to face, Michael Mann’s film has become a classic of the genre.
The now 80-year-old filmmaker took all fans by surprise in March 2023 with the novel release of the sequel, Heat 2! With this book, the director has extended the story of his iconic feature film.
The novel begins immediately after the events of the first film. We follow Chris Shiherlis, a character portrayed by Val Kilmer in Heat. The robber tries to flee the United States. Sole survivor of the gang led by Neil McCauley (De Niro), the criminal is hunted down by Vincent Hanna (Pacino) in a tense manhunt.

Heat 2 is the first novel written by Michael Mann, in collaboration with Meg Gardiner. Does the filmmaker intend to adapt it to the cinema? In April 2023, Deadline revealed that the director was in negotiations with Warner Bros. to sign a contract for the development of this suite.
Adam Driver was expected to play the young version of Neil McCauley, the novel taking place in particular on two eras. While the main story follows Chris Shiherlis, as explained above, a side story with McCauley takes place in Chicago in 1988. The robber and his team plan a big hit while Detective Hanna cuts her teeth in the police force .
Just recently, Michael Mann gave an update on Heat 2 on the microphone of Variety, confirming his desire to transpose his story to the cinema. However, he would not make a deal of it if the project did not succeed.
“The thing is, I don’t think about mortality. I’m too busy for that. What good would it do me? If I absolutely had to do Heat 2, I wouldn’t have lost myself in this magnificent Ferrari story. And I took two years to write a novel. Fortunately, it became a number 1 New York Times bestseller. The things that interest me are those that fascinate me and move me forward. Don’t get me wrong. I want succeed [à adapter Heat 2]. But if I don’t make it, I won’t be incomplete”he hammered.
If Adam Driver was very present in the noises of corridor around the film, it was also question that Ana de Armas embodies the companion of the young McCauley. Rumors also announced Timothée Chalamet as a young version of Vincent Hanna. In June 2022, Al Pacino validated the rising Hollywood star, saying he was in favor of Chalamet being his successor if Heat 2 saw the light of day.
“He’s a fantastic actor. And he presents well, he looks good”he said at the Tribeca Festival. “I believe that Netflix, Amazon or another streaming service could remake a blockbuster like Heat, and even they would fight to do so”said the legendary Pacino.

“It was always my intention to create stories around Heat. There is a rich past around the events of 1995 and an idea of what awaits the characters after. When I was writing the film, it was imperative to me to create complete lives on all the characters and know everything about them”said director Michael Mann.
However, apart from these rumors and the director’s declarations indicating that he wants to adapt it, nothing official about a production of Heat 2 in the cinema. Michael Mann has also gone on something else, the biopic of the legendary Enzo Ferrari with Adam Driver in the costume of the famous Italian entrepreneur. The work should be released soon on Amazon Prime Video.
Moreover, according to IMDb, Michael Mann is preparing another feature film inspired by a true story, that of gangsters Tony Accardo and Sam Giancana.
