Dominic Thiem has the chance to be the fifth Austrian to receive a Laureus World Sports Award (LWSA).
Austria’s tennis star is one of six athletes nominated for the global award in the “Breakthrough of the Year 2020” category. The winners in the six categories will be announced on Thursday (7:00 p.m. CEST) at a virtual gala in Seville.
In addition to Thiem, Spain’s football talent Ansu Fati, Super Bowl winner Patrick Mahomes (USA), Spanish MotoGP world champion Joan Mir, Slovenian Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar and Polish Iga Swiatek, winner of the tennis French Open, nominated. Thiem won his first Grand Slam tournament at the US Open last year and reached the final at the Australian Open.
So far, four Austrians have received an LWSA award: 2003 Arnold Schwarzenegger in the “Sport for Good” category, 2004 ski superstar Hermann Maier for the comeback of the year, 2013 Felix Baumgartner (action athlete) and 2016 the three-time Formula 1 world champion Niki Lauda for his life’s work.
Hamilton, LeBron, Lewandowski, Nadal, Cheptegei or Duplantis?
Over 1,000 journalists worldwide were invited to select the candidates. The winners will be determined by the LWS Academy. After this year’s recordings of Lindsey Vonn and Jessica Ennis-Hill, among others, the LWS-Academy formed 71 former sports greats, including the Carinthian Franz Klammer.
Athletes Joshua Cheptegei and Armand Duplantis, Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, basketball star LeBron James, footballer Robert Lewandowski and tennis ace Rafael Nadal have been nominated for the Sportsman of the Year 2020.
In the women’s race, cyclist Anna van der Breggen, skier Federica Brignone, athlete Brigid Kosgei, tennis player Naomi Osaka, soccer player Wendie Renard and basketball player Breanna Stewart are in the running.
