How does that actually work, such a study into the efficacy of vaccines in younger children? This always happens via the same pattern – with every childhood vaccine. First the vaccines are tested in adults, then the age drops. Once the vaccine has been found to be safe and good, you can move to a lower age group.
At Pfizer, for example, they are now conducting research into the vaccine in children between 2 and 5 years of age, and in children between 6 months and 2 years of age. “Safety is always built in, on the one hand by reducing the age, on the other by properly documenting that the product can be used in very specific age groups,” explains Van Damme.
