In September 2022, the iPhone will celebrate 10 years of the Lightning port. It was in 2012, on the occasion of the presentation of the iPhone 5 that Apple presented its new, more compact, more powerful and more ergonomic charging system.

The Lightning will then be installed on all the brand’s devices for many years and it is still present on the iPhone 13 released in 2021. In the meantime, USB-C has become so popular. point that it has become the global standard for all brands, even Apple. In recent years, Apple has implemented it on several products such as MacBooks and iPads.

On the other hand, there is a product that has still not cracked, it is the iPhone. If from an (eco)logical point of view we do not really understand the choice, we must indeed turn to the financial side. Each time a certified Lightning cable is sold around the world by a company other than Apple, the brand receives a commission. Everything is explained…

With this information, it’s hard to imagine the American giant implementing USB-C on its favorite smartphone. Nevertheless, the fact that other products with an apple logo have switched to USB-C and that government authorities are pushing in this direction on an ecological level, there is reason to remain optimistic.

If the iPhone 14 should still have the Lightning port, can we believe in USB-C on the iPhone 14 Pro? We know that Apple likes to start with its Pro range when it comes to a major change. Ten years later, it would be a strong and coherent choice.

As a reminder, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that the 2021 range (the iPhone 13) would be the first to remove Lightning at the expense of USB-C. It’s easy to see that it didn’t, but the rumors keep coming about the iPhone 14. Let’s not forget the other rumors that speak of an iPhone that only charges via MagSafe, the system of Apple wireless charging.

On the side of the European Commission, we are currently thinking about the implementation of a law requiring USB-C on all electronic devices from 2024. If this request were to be validated, Apple would no longer have the choice .
