Will Apple really make its own 5G modems or will they continue to use Qualcomm modems? Analysts know!
It has not been going well for a while now Qualcomm, which makes chips for smartphones, and the smartphone manufacturer. Apple still uses Qualcomm modems in their iPhones. For example, the iPhone 12 contains the Snapdragon X55 modem, while the new iPhone that will be launched this year will be equipped with the Snapdragon X60 modem. But analysts are sure, Apple is going to make its own modems.
Apple wants to move away from Qualcomm modems
Analysts Blayne Curtis and Thomas O’Malley have researched and describe in their predictions that Apple plans to do this and wants to move away from the Qualcomm modems. This will hurt the regular supplier of modems for iPhones. Chipmakers Broadcom and Qorvo will benefit from this, the analysts said.
Apple has previously confirmed that they are working on this. That came out earlier this week. They are developing this in the yet to be officially opened European Silicon Design Center, which will be located in Munich. This is not surprising, as Apple has taken over the smartphone modem business from Intel. Then it fits into the long-term strategy for the company to produce its own modems.
Still attached to Qualcomm in the coming years
Barclays previously reported that the new Apple modem will support both sub-6GHz and mmWave. These are the two main technologies for 5G networks, so it looks like Apple is serious. Apple still has some time to work on the development of its own 5G modems. The fact that there are still Qualcomm modems in iPhones now, and in the coming years, is the result of a legal battle between the two companies. Apple and Qualcomm agreed in 2019 that Apple will use the Snapdragon 5G modems in the coming years. But after that it is really over. The anilists predict that 2023 will be the year that Apple will have its own modems for their smartphones.
