Will a fourth dose of the anticovid vaccine be offered to the population between 18 and 49 years of age? Salinas answered this

“It still does not have the approval of the National Vaccine Advisory Commission”, as it does for those over 50 years of age and people at risk, said the minister.

After having appeared in Parliament at the request of the Broad Front, the Minister of Public Health, Daniel Salinas, spoke at a press conference on Tuesday night. There he was consulted about the possibility of extending a fourth dose of the anticovid vaccine to other age groups.

“I do not rule out that the range from 18 to 49 years can be evaluated,” said Salinas, and explained that this possibility “does not yet have the approval of the National Vaccine Advisory Commission”, as it does for those over 50 years of age. and people at risk.

In this sense, the minister said that if the pandemic has taught anything, it is that it is necessary to “change according to the circumstances”, for which he considers that the issue of the fourth dose should be evaluated by the commission of experts with the new available epidemiological data. “There is no absolute situation here, of absolute and static knowledge,” he added.

It was precisely in the appearance this Tuesday that the minister said that the new variant of omicron BA.2 represents 35% of the samples analyzed in Uruguay during the month of April.

With the possibility of evaluating a fourth dose for the age group not included in the current administration of the vaccine, Salinas did emphasize that “we must work from 50 (years) up to increase that fourth dose.”

“The response in general to the country’s immunization proposal has been very good, and explains the good results we had, particularly in the second semester, and the decrease in mortality in the first quarter of 2022. In other words, the two doses and the third had a very good reception”, said Salinas.

Last Monday, May 9, the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) reported the Covid-19 figures from last Sunday, May 1, to Saturday, May 7. In that period 2,830 new cases of coronavirus were detected and three people died. Meanwhile, this week, the MSP also released the recommendations for the co-administration of Covid-19, influenza and regular plan vaccines.
