Wildlife Management: A Continuous Effort

Antananarivo is hosting a crucial stakeholder consultation workshop aimed at shaping Madagascar‘s first-ever sustainable wildlife management policy. The workshop,‍ taking place from December 4th⁤ to 5th, is ⁤a ‌collaborative effort spearheaded by the Ministry of Habitat and Sustainable Development.

“To establish legitimacy that⁢ is consistent with‌ the content ‌of the text of a law on the sustainable management of wildlife that is subsequently produced,” explains the ⁢project’s core objective. Despite Madagascar’s commitment to biodiversity conservation and environmental protection through various reforms, a dedicated legal framework for ‍wildlife management has been absent.

The workshop aims‍ to bridge this gap⁣ by fostering a collaborative environment where stakeholders can contribute to the development of a comprehensive and consensus-driven policy. This participatory approach ensures that the final document reflects⁣ the diverse perspectives and needs of all involved parties.

Madagascar⁢ has been actively working to strengthen its legal frameworks in recent years. ‌since 2019,meaningful reforms have been implemented, including the revision of the Gélose law ⁣and the forestry sector. The country has also updated ⁢its National‌ Biodiversity Strategy and Action‌ Plan (NBSAP) to align with the global ⁣biodiversity framework by 2026.

In 2021,with support from the ‘Sustainable Wildlife Management’ (SWM) Program, the Ministry took the⁢ initiative to review Order No. , recognizing its ‌outdated nature and ⁤its inadequacy in addressing current biodiversity conservation and sustainable development challenges. The new ‍sustainable wildlife management policy aligns seamlessly with these ongoing efforts ⁣to modernize Madagascar’s legal landscape.
