Wildfires are raging in several valleys west and northwest of Turin, fanned by the fierce wind. Hundreds of residents had to leave their homes.
According to the fire brigade, the fires were caused by a combination of a very dry surface and strong winds.
Hundreds of residents in the Susa and Lanzo valleys in the Piedmont region, among others, had to leave their homes. Many more families in the area are without power because the fires have destroyed power lines. Near the municipality of Traves, the fire came close to a thoroughfare.
The Italian newspaper The Republic writes that local barracks had to take action more than four hundred times in the past 36 hours. The fire brigade receives support in the valleys from two fire-fighting aircraft and a helicopter.
Wind speeds of more than 100 kilometers per hour were measured in several places. At St. Michael’s Abbey (Sacra di San Michele), a tourist attraction located on a hilltop, a record speed of 228 kilometers per hour was recorded.
