Wildfire smoke reaches New York City from the west coast – Telemundo New York (47)

NEW YORK – Smoke from the West Coast wildfires reaches New York City.

A US government model shows that smoke from more than 60 western wildfires is beginning to billow across the country.

It’s becoming an unfortunate new feature of New York City’s summer weather: smoke from the West Coast wildfires rises to the east, adding to the haze here.

More than 60 wildfires are currently burning in the western states, and in parts of southern Calfornia the danger from more fires is considered “extreme.”

As the smoke builds up, it becomes engulfed in weather systems and is transported across the country. As recently as last September, western smoke turned the skies of all three states an oddly milky color.

The same phenomenon is happening now, as shown by an experimental US government model known as the HRRR-Smoke model.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, says that the experimental 3-D model allows you to simulate the spread of smoke over varied terrain.
