NEW YORK — A raging fire in a Brooklyn apartment building injured at least 17 people Monday, one critically, authorities say.
The FDNY received an emergency call at 6:45 am regarding the fire. The flames started on the first floor of the building located on Penn Street and Harrison Avenue, in the Williamsburg sector, according to firefighters.
Strong smoke, flames and the screams of trapped people were what rescuers witnessed when they arrived at the scene.
A total of 17 people were rescued during the fire, the FDNY says. A 71-year-old woman suffered the most serious injuries and was rushed to Brooklyn hospital in critical condition. Three other residents were also taken to the hospital.
In a press conference, the FDNY fire department said that more than a hundred firefighters came to the scene and within an hour the fire was brought under control.
The cause of the fire is unknown, therefore authorities continue to investigate.
