Geert-Jan Knoops, Wilders’ lawyer, writes in a letter to Akyol that the columnist’s statement is ‘obviously incorrect’. The PVV wants to take away the right to vote from people with dual nationality and also not allow them to hold political office. “This has nothing to do with people ‘with a Muslim background’.”
Five days time
On behalf of Wilders, Knoops demands that Akyol retract his statement within five days. If not, ‘the PVV will consider legal action’.

Akyol doesn’t seem very impressed with the letter. “Geert Wilders – mister freedom of speech – is offended because I said he wants to take away the right to vote from Muslims. That is a factual interpretation of this position,” he writes on Twitter, referring to the PVV position on dual nationality. “Moroccan Muslims cannot renounce that nationality. Cry baby. So no rectification.”
Offside
Akyol’s statement followed a comment by Johan Derksen, who said in the talk show that he thinks Wilders says very reasonable things ‘when the sharp edges’ have been removed. Akyol responded with his ruling on voting rights, concluding, “He’s sidelining himself.”
