Wilders and NSC agree on asylum: circulation law off the table and border controls

Geert Wilders (PVV) and Nicolien van Vroonhoven (NSC) have made significant progress in the asylum law crisis. Instead of the ’emergency law’, there would be an ’emergency measures law’, says political commentator Leendert Beekman. Both parties are proposing that the extradition law be scrapped, that border controls be introduced, and that Syria be designated a safe country. The question is whether the BBB and the VVD agree.

India: Wilders and NSC agree on asylum, from ’emergency law’ to ’emergency measures law’

The compromise, which was completely sought in the asylum area, means that the emergency law has been renamed as the law of emergency measures. There is no need to declare an emergency and the Chambers can give their views on the asylum measures. The latter was a very important point for NSC. Under emergency law, the Senate and House of Representatives would be bypassed by a royal decision.

“It is important for the PVV that it has a nice name,” says Beekman. Because ‘Wilders said before that he had no backbone like a banana and that emergency law should and would be introduced’. With the a new term – emergency measures law – he wants to dispel the idea that he was adding water to the wine.

Safe Syria and border control

“In terms of content, the compromise would include eliminating the permanent residence permit,” says Beekman. ‘Parts of Syria would also be considered safe and the separatist law should be abolished this year.’

In addition, NSC and PVV want to limit family reunification. ‘Therefore it will no longer be possible to reunite adult children.’ Beekman says many of these measures were already included in the coalition agreement.

What’s surprising: border controls would also be introduced at the end of November. Beekman: ‘The question is whether all these measures will be included in the law, as they are now being discussed by BBB and VVD.’

The Friday date is not holy

This afternoon, the two coalition parties came together in the Catshuis. Prime Minister Dick Schoof first set a date of next Friday to break the ban. But according to the political commentator, VVD and BBB say that date is not sacred to them. ‘They want to be able to look at it quietly, with the group and in ministerial consultations.’

Don’t just register at the cross

The compromise means that the coalition agreement is broken. According to Beekman, this means that the other coalition parties will want something in return. Then the question is what is this, outside the sanctuary area, and how much does it cost.

The VVD is committed to not spending extra money. According to Beekman, the VVD and BBB will not just sign the compromise between NSC and PVV.
