NEW YORK — A driver of a stolen commercial truck led police on a chase through Staten Island Thursday night, crashing into nearly 30 vehicles, including three NYPD cruisers, before the chase reached its end, police officials told our sister network NBC New York.
Several officers were injured in the chase, but all were treated at the hospital for what the NYPD says are minor injuries.
The chase began around 7:30 p.m. in Bishop Street y Cranford Avenue and ended up six miles away in Beach Street y Van Duzer Streetsaid the source. The truck ran over several vehicles and several were piled up on top of each other.
“It was just a loud noise,” said witness Shaw-Nae Dixon.
The NYPD told our sister network NBC New York that New Jersey Police notified them to be on the lookout for a man in the stolen truck. Police said the suspect was wanted for a crime spree.
“We tried to stop him,” said NYPD Deputy Chief Joseph Golotta. “He backed up and crashed into one of our police cars. As he tried to drive away, he dragged one of our police cars 30 to 40 feet before he broke free.”
Police later identified the driver as Michael Rompa, 48, and said he faces six charges, including assault, reckless endangerment and fleeing an officer, with more potential charges pending.
