The Golden State Warriors defeated the Boston Celtics 111: 107 in a competitive game. Stephen Curry and Andrew Wiggins were the outstanding players.
Boston Celtics (14-15) – Golden State Warriors (24-5) 107:111 (BOXSCORE)
In the first game after his three-point record, Curry once again led his team with 30 points, but sank only 5 of his 14 attempts from downtown and looked exhausted in the second half (3/13 FG). He also got 5 rebounds and played 4 assists. Wiggins contributed another 27 points and had a really hot hand from outside (5/7).
In the Celtics, which had to do without Dennis Schröder (cold), Jayson Tatum was the most successful thrower with 27 points (9/18), he also got 8 rebounds and prepared 6 baskets. Marcus Smart (19, 6 rebounds, 8 assists) and Jaylen Brown (20, 9 rebounds) also made a good game.
NBA: Stephen Curry takes over in the first quarter
The corona madness doesn’t stop at Golden State either, which is why rookie Moses Moody celebrated his first NBA start instead of Jordan Poole. And the 19-year-old was able to see his backcourt partner and now officially the best three-shooter of all time in action at close range. After a three-way curry plus foul and another hit by the downtown chef within 60 seconds, the Warriors set themselves off in double digits after just four minutes.
Led by the aggressive Smart, Boston responded with a 9-0 run that brought the Celts back within striking distance. However, the GSW defensive was at an elitist level from the start. In the zone there were no easy points for the home side and the boards clearly belonged to the guests. Curry’s third three in the first quarter (16 points!) Finally made it 34:26, which also meant the first break.
The second quarter belonged to Wiggins. The swingman could not be stopped at all (18 points) and, with Curry on the bench, almost single-handedly ensured that Golden State pulled away again. After a Wiggins triple and a free throw from Kevon Looney, the Warriors were leading with +20 with 4:40 on the clock in the second quarter. As in the first quarter, it was the threesome that saved Boston from an even greater calamity. After Tatum and Josh Richardson (2x) scored downtown, it was only -10 from the Celtics point of view at halftime (54:64).
Warriors: Stephen Curry makes the decision
Ime Udoka then apparently found the right words at halftime. The Celtics came out of the locker room with an uncanny energy, made the game fast offensively and played superb defense. It was again Smart who went ahead with a charge, a jump ball won against Looney and some clever assists. The result: a 10-2 run.
And Boston kept one foot on the accelerator. They destroyed the otherwise strong Warriors quarter with their intensity, sent at least two players as soon as Curry touched the ball and kept Golden State at 14 points (the fewest in a quarter this season). Since they scored 27 themselves, they went into the last section with 81:82 from the Celtics point of view. The only downer: the strong Smart picked up his fifth foul in the third section.
A three from Tatum gave the Celtics their first lead after the early 3-2 at the start of the last quarter, but the Warriors responded with their stars on the bench with a 10-2 run. As a result, the lead changed several times before Curry went back to +10 with a three with 4:25 on the clock. Boston reduced it again to -3, a buttery soft curry floater but made the decision.
