The 29-year-old SR was arrested by the police of the Nieuw Nickerie office on suspicion of threatening and assaulting his ex-wife on the night of Friday, March 19 to Saturday, March 20.
The victim MS (21) reported threats and assault against the suspected SR to the police on Tuesday, March 16. According to the declarant, she has a girl with SR, but that she has ended the relationship for some time.
The suspect, who does not agree with her decision, chased her from her workplace to her home address on March 16, where they had an altercation.
In doing so, SR hit her in the face and threatened her with death. The situation got out of hand, with the woman being strangled by her ex-husband. A bystander approached the victim’s cry for help and managed to free her from the plight.
The ex-husband was tracked down and arrested by the local police at his home address in Nieuw Nickerie. At the arraignment, the suspect admitted that he went to his ex-wife’s home to talk about their relationship. When his ex-partner indicated that she did not want to resume the relationship, SR assaulted and strangled her.
After consultation with a member of the Surinamese Public Prosecution Service, S. was detained.
