Wife of late Haitian president reveals murder incident

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

For the first time, the wife of the late President Haiti Jovenel Moise opens his voice after the death of his husband. Martine Moise described the tense events on Saturday (6/7) via an audio message on her official Twitter.

“I’m alive, thanks to God,” Moise said in Creole.

“In the blink of an eye, mercenaries entered my house and shot my husband with bullets…without even giving him a chance to say a word.”

Since the shooting, the mastermind and motive for the shooting are still a question mark. But Moise gave various possible reasons. She said the killers could have been sent by people who might not have been with the husband’s plans to provide “roads, water and electricity, a (constitutional) referendum and elections set at the end of the year.”

Perhaps, he continued, the mastermind behind the shooting did not want to see Haiti’s transition.

“I’m crying, it’s true, but we can’t let the country lose its way. We can’t let its blood… spill in vain,” he added.

According to the Haitian authorities, the 28-person killer group consisted of 26 Colombians and 2 Haitian-Americans. They stormed and opened fire on the couple in their home. So far 17 people have been arrested and 3 people have died. The others are still at large.

Then regarding the transition of power, interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph said he was still in control. But a group of senators backed by several opposition groups plans to appoint Senate leader Joseph Lambert as interim president and Ariel Henry, whom Moise had appointed earlier in the week as the new prime minister.

But for now, Joseph may still have the police and security forces on his side.

“The constitution is clear: I have to hold an election and actually hand power over to someone else who is elected,” he said in an interview broadcast by CNN.

Meanwhile, Port-au-Prince is slowly coming back to life. Businesses opened and people returned to the streets of the capital. But it is undeniable, the tragic death of the president made the people frightened.

“If the president can be assassinated here, I-an ordinary citizen-will not be spared. I have to seek asylum, to find a better life elsewhere,” said Louise Limage.
