At the “Stars of Sports” 2023 award ceremony in Biebrich Castle, Peter Beuth honored the many volunteers who are committed to sport in Hesse. Traditionally, towards the end of the year, sports clubs in Hesse are honored with the silver “Stars of Sports” award for special social and voluntary commitment.
Beuth: Sport in Hesse depends on volunteer work
“Sport in Hesse thrives on the commitment of thousands of volunteers. The Stars of Sport honor the people who work at the grassroots level of sport. They are the ones who run clubs in their free time, facilitate games and training operations, maintain sports facilities and often also contribute to the local common good. They are the foundation of club sport and help people move, have positive experiences with sport and great projects with a social impact are realized. Without these people, sport would not be the same and the same applies to our society. The work of the volunteers is also reflected in the fact that the Hessian sports clubs were able to record a membership record of more than 2.1 million people this year after the challenges of the corona pandemic. All clubs that take part in the ‘Stars of Sport’ competition are winners and I would like to thank them very much for their commitment. I would like to warmly congratulate the six winners, who were able to impress with their outstanding commitment and special creativity, on their success,” said Sports Minister Peter Beuth.

Sports funding in Hesse is rising to a record level
Hesse’s sports clubs have around 2.1 million members, who are organized in almost 7,500 clubs of the Hesse State Sports Association. The Hessian state government has supported organized sport in Hesse in 2022 with a volume of around 65.5 million euros. In 2023, funding of more than 68 million euros will be available. The state government’s sports funding policy focuses on the smallest units, the clubs in the municipalities. The range of support for smaller clubs in particular ranges from the purchase of new sports equipment to securing training and game operations to promoting youth work.
Since March 1st, member clubs and associations of the Hesse State Sports Association that are particularly affected by the energy price increases as a result of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which violates international law, have been able to apply for compensation through the state program “Hesse stands together”. In the first half of the year from March to October alone, almost 600 clubs submitted an application. The requested support volume amounts to over 2.2 million euros. During the Corona pandemic, the Hessian state government supported Hessian sports clubs with a total of five Corona emergency aid programs with more than 19 million euros.
The “Stars of Sport”
The “Stars of Sports”, an award from the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) and the Volksbanken Raiffeisenbanken, recognize and reward the voluntary commitment of sports clubs and their energetic members. The competition, which has been held since 2004, is aimed at clubs that are socially committed beyond just sports, for example with special activities and innovative projects, with their regular club program or long-term initiatives. The award is also possible for a commitment that responds quickly to current, special social challenges. The competition takes place at the local, state and federal levels. At the local level, clubs apply for the “Stars of Sport” in bronze. Combined with a cash bonus of around 1,500 euros, a club with first place automatically qualifies for the national final for the “Stars of Sport” in silver. The award is endowed with 2,500 euros.
A jury decides who will qualify as the national winner for the national final for the “Stars of Sports” in gold. All finalists will be honored with the “Star of Sports” in gold and prize money. The winner of the final will be honored with the “Great Star of Sports” in gold and can look forward to additional prize money of 10,000 euros.
