Elias Gruber gave the Hessians a 3-0 lead with a 19-yard field goal before the Phantoms increased it to 10-0 in the second quarter: Timo Bauer caught a 35-yard pass from quarterback Marc Zierau and Gruber proved his worth Can also with the subsequent PAT. The hosts shortened 3:34 minutes before half-time to 3:10 with a 25-yard field goal, but nothing more happened until the break whistle.
In the third half of the game, it was Zierau who further extended the Phantoms’ lead. The quarterback served Tim Schneider over 35 yards, who then brought the conversion into the end zone and the 18:3 on the scoreboard.
In the fourth quarter, the Jets missed a field goal from 47 yards while Bauer’s second touchdown gave the Phantoms a 24-3 lead. Bauer caught a pass from Philipp Lotz before Elias Gruber put the finishing touch with a PAT.
„We tried to use all the players, but we ran out of time a bit in the end. On the other hand, we rested our four youth national team candidates – Nick Kaufman, Keon Rohe, Timo Hanewald and Connor Fleischer. They used rookies and newcomers,” summed up Head Coach Freund after the final whistle.
His team is still “far from perfect”. Many individual mistakes – especially on offense – would have to be eliminated in the next four weeks before the start of the season. “Our quarterbacks, both just out of the U16s, were also in action. So a good test for us because we now know what we have to work on before the start of the season. We are now looking forward to the training camp next week.”
