Vienna (OTS) – On Thursday, September 30, 2021, the wienwood – Timber Construction Prize Vienna was awarded for the third time as part of a festive evening event in the Architekturzentrum Wien: Aus 56 projects submitted, which were created in Vienna over the past five years, a top-class jury of experts selected four winners, one special prize and six awards.
the four Award winners are the Paulasgasse residential complex, the Ilse Wallentin House BOKU Wien library and seminar building, the HoHo Wien high-rise building and the Pötzleinsdorf kindergarten. On the Special Price VinziDorf Wien, a residential village for long-term homeless people, can look forward to it. the six awards were awarded to the Lisseeweg residential community of Caritas Vienna, the Bikes and Rails residential complex, the Christian Bucher Gasse elementary school, the HOFER Seestadt Aspern branch, the Pötzleinsdorf summer house and the Augarten office.
Timber construction is increasingly finding its way into the city. With the growing demands on climate protection, one of the greatest advantages of building with wood comes to the fore: The renewable building material wood binds CO2 and reduces greenhouse gas emissions, around 40 percent of which are caused by the construction sector worldwide. At the same time, the influx of people into the cities continues and the pressure on the creation of living space is increasing. It is therefore a central task for the future to further develop cities with climate-friendly building.

In recent years, not only has the technical quality of execution in timber construction in Vienna been further professionalized, but new building projects in larger dimensions have also been implemented.

the Jury chaired by Gabriele Kaiser, architecture journalist honors the diversity of urban timber construction and the further development in the field of prefabrication: “The projects are of a consistently high quality of execution and show the entire spectrum of applications for timber construction, from temporary furniture for urban areas to demountable commercial buildings to high-rise buildings that characterize the cityscape. The timber construction is no longer a foreign body in the city, the atmospheric and haptic qualities of the timber construction come to the fore especially where the timber construction has been left visible. “
The aim of wienwood is to create more awareness of the creative possibilities, the technological potential and the ecological qualities of building with wood and to appreciate the work of building owners, architects, executing companies and decision-makers. The total prize money is EUR 12,000.
The wienwood 21 was tendered by proHolz Austria in cooperation with the City of Vienna and the Architekturzentrum Wien and with the support of Wiener Städtische Versicherung.
