Wiener Linien continues to implement its plan to convert to barrier-free trams. What is the current stock of trams with steps?

The latest data from Andrea Zeffererthe spokeswoman for Wiener Linien, on September 4, 2023. BIZEPS provide an overview of the current status of these efforts.

According to the current figures, there are currently 332 “ULF“ (old low-floor trams), 58 “Flexity“ (new low-floor trams) and 99 “E2’ (high-floor tram with steps) in operation in Vienna. (The picture above shows an E2 on the left, a Flexity in the middle and a ULF on the right.)

It should be noted that fewer than 100 of the older, step-equipped trams are now in service.

Flexity now also on line 46

This is part of the city’s long-term strategy to continuously increase accessibility in public transport. The extension of the range of use of the Flexity trams, which now also operate on line 46, is a further step in this direction.

However, the transition process is slow and complex. The specific reasons for the slow implementation of accessibility in Vienna can be read in a detailed article on the BIZEPS website.

The article, available at this link, analyzes the various challenges and complexities involved in this transition.
